The GUTTA-VISIR system (here a video-tutorial) was presented by Gianandrea Mannarini in the frame of the “decarbonisation” session of the “Journey of a droplet to the ocean of decarbonisation” workshop, chaired by the journalist Marina Lalovic.

The presentation regarded the functioning of the system, devised for computing least-CO2 ferry routes from wave and current forecasting products (from the Copernicus Marine Service), as well as an assessment of the first five months of continued operations of GUTTA-VISIR at the HPC facility of CMCC.

Between 1 and 4 thousand tonnes CO2 could be saved annually, just in the Adriatic and Ionian sea, by making use of a ship routing system such as GUTTA-VISIR. The savings in terms of CII (carbon intensity indicator) can be, for the specific ferry considered, in the range between 0.6 and 2.2%. This is sizeable, when compared to the reduction targets adopted by IMO last year, and entering in force on January 1st, 2023.
